A moat is a consequence
Investing, economics, and compounding
Companies often talk about building a moat as if it were a feature on a roadmap.
Durable advantage is usually a consequence of doing something difficult for long enough. A network becomes more useful as participation grows. A brand earns trust through repeated experience. A cost advantage emerges from a system competitors cannot copy without changing their economics.
The moat is not the claim. It is the accumulated result.
This is why genuine advantage can look unimpressive in the early years. Compounding systems rarely announce themselves at the beginning. They become obvious after imitation has become expensive.
