Certainty is emotionally efficient
Psychology and human behaviour
Certainty feels good because it ends the search.
Once we are sure, conflicting evidence can be dismissed, opponents can be categorised, and ambiguity no longer needs to be carried. Certainty reduces emotional work.
It can also reduce contact with reality.
Many important decisions do not offer certainty. They offer probabilities, partial evidence, and consequences that unfold slowly. The mature response is not endless hesitation. It is the ability to act while keeping the belief revisable.
Confidence should describe our willingness to decide, not our claim to know everything.
