Convenience can remove meaning

Technology and artificial intelligence

Convenience removes friction, and friction is often genuinely wasteful.

But not every inconvenience is a defect. The effort involved in cooking for someone, visiting a shop, writing a thoughtful message, or learning a difficult skill can be part of what gives the activity value.

Technology tends to measure the time removed. It is less capable of measuring the meaning that disappeared with it.

The right question is not whether an experience can be made faster. It is which parts of the experience should remain costly because the cost is part of the care.
