Depth needs boredom

Learning, focus, and mental models

The mind needs periods in which nothing immediately rewarding happens.

Boredom creates the space for an unresolved thought to return, combine with something else, and deepen. If every empty moment is filled, the mind learns to expect stimulation before effort has time to become interesting.

This matters beyond productivity. It changes the kind of ideas we are able to have.

Many thoughts arrive quickly. The better ones often need enough silence to become less obvious.
