Empathy sometimes needs to remove the boulder

Leadership and organisations

Feeling another person’s difficulty is human. Leadership asks what we do with that feeling.

Empathy can become strangely passive. We understand the pressure, acknowledge the frustration, and leave the underlying problem untouched. Compassion adds action.

Sometimes action means changing a broken process. Sometimes it means giving direct feedback. Sometimes it means protecting someone from an unreasonable demand. The correct response depends on the situation.

What matters is refusing to confuse emotional recognition with practical help.

If we can remove part of the boulder, sympathy alone is not enough.
