The future enters through an unimpressive door

Important technologies often look inadequate at the beginning.

They are slower, less reliable, or strangely limited compared with the systems they may eventually replace. Experienced people dismiss them because they judge the early version against the mature incumbent.

That comparison is understandable and often misleading.

The better question is not whether the new technology is superior today. It is whether its rate of improvement opens a path into markets, behaviours, or cost structures that the incumbent cannot comfortably follow.

The future rarely arrives looking complete. It usually appears as a toy, a niche product, or an inconvenient experiment.
