Growth can conceal weak attachment
Growth, marketing, and distribution
A product can grow while failing to matter.
Paid acquisition, novelty, or a large distribution partner can fill the top of a funnel. The numbers look healthy until attention moves elsewhere and the users do not return.
Retention asks a more difficult question: did the product become useful enough to earn a place in someone’s life?
Growth without attachment is rented. It lasts while the promotion, subsidy, or excitement continues.
The strongest signal is not how many people arrive. It is what changes for the people who stay.
