Incentives write the hidden strategy
Strategy and systems
An organisation may say that it values the long term, collaboration, and customer trust.
Then it rewards quarterly volume, individual performance, and visible activity.
People eventually believe the incentive system more than the values statement.
This does not make them cynical. It makes them attentive. They learn what the organisation genuinely celebrates, tolerates, and promotes.
If behaviour repeatedly contradicts strategy, the first place to look is not motivation. It is the structure around the behaviour.
Incentives are strategy translated into everyday consequences. When the two disagree, incentives usually win.
