Infallible systems are dangerous systems
Technology and artificial intelligence
Any system that considers itself incapable of error will eventually protect the error.
This is true of religions, political institutions, companies, and software. The problem is not that mistakes occur. Mistakes are unavoidable. The problem begins when authority makes correction impossible.
As AI systems become more influential, we should care less about claims of perfection and more about mechanisms for challenge. Can a decision be questioned? Can the reasoning be inspected? Can the system change when reality disagrees with it?
Trust should not require infallibility. It should come from visible, reliable correction.
