Leadership begins before authority

Leadership and organisations

Titles can grant decision rights. They cannot grant leadership.

Leadership begins when someone takes responsibility for improving a situation they did not create. They bring clarity, connect people, and move the work forward without waiting for formal permission.

This kind of influence is slower than issuing an instruction. It is also more revealing. Without positional power, the quality of the idea and the trust around the person have to do the work.

Authority can amplify leadership. It cannot substitute for it.
