Most people are protecting something
Psychology and human behaviour
Difficult behaviour often protects something: status, belonging, certainty, dignity, or a story about who the person believes they are.
If we respond only to the behaviour, the conversation becomes a contest. If we understand what is being protected, a different path may appear.
This does not require accepting manipulation or disrespect. Boundaries remain necessary.
But even a boundary can be clearer when we understand the fear or need underneath the reaction.
People make more sense when we stop assuming that the visible conflict is the entire conflict.
