Relationships do not scale, culture does
Leadership and organisations
A leader cannot build a personal relationship with everyone in a large organisation.
But the quality of the leader’s closest relationships travels. Direct reports learn how disagreement is handled, whether bad news is safe to share, and what happens when someone makes a mistake. They repeat those patterns with their own teams.
Culture spreads through these small interactions more than through speeches or posters.
This makes a leader’s immediate behaviour unusually consequential. The way a conversation is conducted near the top can eventually shape conversations between people the leader may never meet.
Relationships do not scale. Their patterns do.
