Technology arrives before society is ready

Technology and artificial intelligence

Technology can spread faster than the habits required to use it wisely.

Giving everyone access to information does not automatically create an informed society. Access without education can amplify certainty, outrage, and manipulation. The tool reaches millions before the norms, institutions, and judgement around it have had time to develop.

This pattern will matter even more with AI. The question is not only what a technology can do. We also need to ask what happens when it becomes available to people and institutions that are not prepared for its consequences.

Technical progress can be exponential. Social adaptation is usually slow, uneven, and painfully human.
