The emotional work is still work

Leadership and organisations

Management is often described through plans, targets, and decisions. Much of the actual work is emotional.

A leader absorbs uncertainty without pretending it does not exist. They notice when confidence is fading, create room for disagreement, and deliver difficult news without transferring unnecessary anxiety to the team.

This work is hard to measure, which makes it easy to undervalue. Yet teams feel its absence immediately.

Emotional steadiness is not performance or permanent calm. It is the ability to remain useful when the situation becomes charged.

People remember the leader who made a difficult moment clearer.
