The present is not raw material

Philosophy, meaning, and society

It is easy to treat the present as raw material for a better future.

This meeting builds the company. This workout prepares the body. This conversation maintains the relationship. Everything becomes useful for something later.

Purpose matters, but a life experienced only instrumentally becomes strangely absent. The future keeps receiving all the meaning while the present carries the labour.

Some activities deserve to be more than investments. A walk can be a walk. Time with someone can matter without producing an outcome.

Not every hour needs to justify itself to a later one.
