The trait on display may be the disguise
Psychology and human behaviour
People sometimes display a quality most loudly when they are least certain of it.
Exaggerated confidence may be protecting insecurity. Performative indifference may conceal a need for approval. Constant toughness may be fear wearing armour.
This is useful to remember when someone’s behaviour feels disproportionate. The visible trait may not be the full character. It may be the defence.
The same observation is harder and more valuable when turned inward. Which qualities do I need other people to notice, and what might that need be protecting?
